A Children´s Rights workshop was held at TIS in March 2015. A specialist from the Estonian Union of Child Welfare visited our school and gave a workshop where grade 4-9 students discussed children´s rights and responsibilities. In April, during our annual Earth Week, we also talked about animal welfare, and listened to a presentation by a special guest from Tartu University of Life Sciences.

Fun Sports Games
This project has helped us to stay sporty as well! All partners organised playing fun sports games, and shared videos about the games with each other. Our PE teacher Hasso held a fun and active outdoor break for the whole school, and our grade 3 teacher Nic made a video about it. The video has been shared with the partners. In addition to playing fun sports games our students, teachers and other staff members promoted active and healthy living by using pedometers in order to find out how many steps they actually make during a school day. This turned out to be an extremely popular activity, and the step counts were surprising and motivating!
BISH Charity Projects
Three charity projects have been linked to Erasmus+ BISH project.
Tartu International School has celebrated St. Lucia Day for past three years with a beautiful concert. At Christmas time 2014 the concert, mini-market and café were organised again in co-operation of the whole school community. The results of this event were presented to the partners during their visit to Estonia. Our grade 7 student Sophia made the presentation about the event, please take a look below!
In May 2015 our 4th graders participated in a Sport Relief event Heategevuslik Teatejooks (Charity Run). Through this event funds are raised for physiotherapy of the children with moving difficulties and disabilities.

On 31st of March 2016 TIS organised a Global Market! This was a charity event to raise money for the children´s education in Kenya and Ghana. The school´s partners in this event were NGO Mondo and Erasmus+ programme. The school has personal contacts with NGO Mondo and people who lead and coordinate the education projects in Africa. With help of teachers, parents and students the market made 320 euros! The charity organisation that the school is cooperating with has calculated that the school supplies which the children in Ghana and Kenya need per one year cost approximately 40 euros (two sets of uniforms, school bag, footwear and socks, notebooks and pens-pencils, school-year end examination fee). This means that 8 children can go to school for at least one more year in Ghana or Kenya! The collected money will be transferred to the African children´s education fund at MTÜ Mondo. Mondo is an independent Estonian organization, which is devoted on development cooperation, global education and humanitarian aid.
We sold cakes and other pastries as well as students´ art works at the Global Market!

Art Works Inspired by the National Artists
TIS grade 5-9 students and teachers conducted several project activities during the spring trip to Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia. The Estonian National Arts Museum KUMU was visited. The students learned about Estonian national arts and made graphical art works in a workshop. One of the BISH project objectives is to introduce students the structure of the state, therefore a trip to the Estonian parliament was organised as well. According to the students and teachers the trip to Tallinn was a great success! View a selection of photos below.
Introducing Estonian National Hero to BISH community
A video depicting one story about the Estonian national hero Kalevipoeg was turned into a play script and acted out by TIS grade 4 students. The story is about how the hedgehog got its spikes. Grade 4 English teacher Nic helped them through the process, made and edited the video that has been shared with the partners.
Presentation About an Estonian Sports Hero
For the quiz that took place in France each school made a short presentation about one national athlete. Our PE teacher Hasso put together the most important facts and some photos of the Estonian national hero Erkki Nool.
Sharing Winter Crafts: Wool Snowflakes
You´ll need:
-two sticks: can be toothpicks, popsicle sticks, or similar
-wool or yarn: different colour and thickness
-scissors
Instructions:
1.Cross two sticks. You can attach them with glue (hot glue works best).
2.Tie a thread of wool around the middle section of the cross.
3.Weave the wool thread around the for sticks: one round around the stick from the back, and moves to the next stick above it.
4.If you change the colour, make a know so that it stays at the back of your star. Try to hide the knot.
5.The back side and front side of the star are different.
6.To finish weaving tie the end of the wool thread around one stick. Add a loop to hang up the star.
Tips:
Use a thicker wool and popsicle sticks with younger children. Attach the sticks into a cross with hot glue. You may want to mark the popsicle sticks with numbers, it´s easier for younger children to keep the weaving rhythm then.
Create a “weaving chant”. E.g. “Over one, over two, over three, over four.”

Children´s Rights Week
During the Children´s Rights Week we learned about what´s legal for young people in Estonia. We also listened to a presentation about children´s rights by a representative from the Estonian Union for Child Welfare. It has to be remembered that rights and responsibilities go hand in hand!
